Sudden Hearing Loss: Why Rapid Assessment Matters

Recently, while seeing patients at one of my private office in Montreal, I was asked if I could urgently assess a young woman who had suddenly lost the hearing in one ear.

I was able to see her promptly and arranged an urgent hearing test. The test confirmed that she had developed profound sudden sensorineural hearing loss in the affected ear.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is an important medical condition because early diagnosis and treatment can significantly affect the chances of hearing recovery. I immediately started her on high-dose corticosteroids and arranged additional treatment with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Fortunately, her follow-up hearing tests have demonstrated a significant return of hearing in the affected ear.

Cases like this are an important reminder that sudden hearing loss should never simply be observed or assumed to be caused by a blocked ear. A sudden, unexplained loss of hearing in one ear warrants prompt assessment by an ENT specialist and an audiogram.

Fortunately, this patient with an urgent problem  had the appropriate investigations and treatment without unnecessary delay.

After many years of treating patients with head and neck and ENT conditions, it remains extremely rewarding to see how timely diagnosis and treatment can make a meaningful difference in a patient’s outcome.
